In Miami, and in many other parts of the United States, cars can turn right on red.
Yes. Let me repeat that for my fellow Europeans.
Drivers can literally see a red light, and if there isn’t a sign telling them not to, they can simply… go. Turn-right-on-red. Like the light is more of a suggestion than an instruction.
It’s insane.
There are many things I’ve adjusted to since moving here. Eggs are white, not brown. Every drink arrives with enough ice to survive a small apocalypse. Price tags don’t actually show the price (because tax likes to surprise you at the register). And there are apparently two climates: the one outside and the one inside buildings, where the AC is blasting like the world didn’t just spend twenty years telling us it would destroy the planet.
The list could go on and on and on.
But today I almost missed the chance to slice/rant/complain because a white Tesla (those things have cameras everywhere right?) decided to exercise its right to turn right on red.
While I was crossing the street.
Apparently pedestrians are also a suggestion.

We can turn right on red here in Canada, too. Ha! There is a lot of this; especially for pedestrians. I am glad you are safe! You captured these little pieces of Americana so well — I could feel and see your frustration.

lol! The more you know. I had no idea (also I’ve never been to Canada). Yeah slicing calmed me down but I was pretty mad😅

I have always lived in the US but whenever anyone in my family decides to turn right on red we talk it through. “I don’t see a sign that says I can’t so I can turn right on red.”
I’m sorry the Tesla almost turned into you!

Loved your POV of the differences between the USA and Europe. A lot like Argentina. Of course, our ancestors came from Spain.

I don’t know what’s in the air but today was not a good day for pedestrians! As I was walking home, this truck stops at the last second when they see me, I had to speed up to finish crossing! I hope that we can become a less car dependent society!

Glad you are okay! As I was reading, I thought you were in a car and witnessed something. Once I got to the last part I was surprised – and then relieved that you are ok!

UGH! And the fact it was a Tesla too 🙄😒
My least favorite thing about Miami drivers is that they don’t signal when they turn!! So many great craft moves in this rant slice.
But also, we have brown eggs here 🤣 you just buy the white ones.
